1. Volker Turk appointed as next UN High Commissioner for Human Rights

  • UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres appointed Volker Turk of Austria as the next UN High Commissioner for Human Rights.
  • The new High Commissioner is currently coordinating global policy work as an Under-Secretary-General in the UN’s Executive Office.
  • From 2019 to 2021, Turk served as Assistant Secretary-General for Strategic Coordination in the UN chief’s Executive Office.
  • Turk has devoted his long and distinguished career to advancing universal human rights

2. NASA picks Axiom Space to make Artemis III spacesuits

  • NASA has selected Axiom Space to develop a moonwalking system for the Artemis III
  • Artemis will put humans back on the surface of the Moon for the first time in 50 years. 
  • The contract, with a base value of $228.5 million is a task order to develop the next-generation Artemis spacesuit. 
  • The space agency used its 50 years of spacesuit experience to define the technical and safety requirements for the next generation of spacesuits.

3. Fortune India Rich List 2022: 142 billionaires worth $832 billion

  • Fortune has released India’s list of ‘India’s Richest’ for 2022.
  • According to the report, the wealth of 142 billionaires based in India is collectively worth $832 billion (Rs 66.36 trillion).
  • The maiden list was made in collaboration with wealth management firm, Waterfield Advisors.
  • Fortune and Waterfield collected details of listed and unlisted wealth, additional information regarding investments outside of the listed business: such as stakes in other public companies.

4. Army, Air Force conduct joint exercise ‘Gagan strike’ in Punjab

  • Army’s Kharga Corps and the Indian Air Force conducted a joint exercise to showcase the might and prowess of the armed forces.
  • Termed “Gagan Strike”, the exercise was conducted over a period of four days in several areas of Punjab, bordering Ambala in Haryana.
  • The force multiplier effect of combining these machines with ground operations has enhanced the combat superiority of our forces.

5. King Charles to be proclaimed Britain’s new monarch

  • King Charles will officially be proclaimed as Britain's new monarch in a ceremony followed by gun salutes and the reading of proclamations.
  • Charles, 73, succeeded his mother immediately, but an Accession Council made up of hundreds of politicians, bishops and senior civil servants will proclaim his succession  at a ceremony.
  • Charles is king and head of state of the United Kingdom and 14 other realms including Australia, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea

6. IIT-Madras, University of Sydney partnered for energy challenges

  • IIT-Madras and the University of Sydney have entered into a research partnership to help address the energy challenges facing nations across the world. 
  • The partnership will see each of the institutions investing AU$50,000 a year in joint funding for up to four research projects.
  • The partnership will see experts from the two institutions working together to develop research and advanced technology in fields related to energy.

7. Meghalaya CM launches ‘Residents Safety & Security’ portal

  • Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma launched the online portal of the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA).
  • It will be beneficial for monitoring and better implementation of other services and programmes of the government, especially in critical areas such as health care
  • The digitisation process will connect more than 6,000 villages in the state to the online system.

8. India’s eastern-most military garrison of Kibithu named after Bipin Rawat

  • The strategically important Kibithu Military Garrison on the banks of Lohit Valley along the Line of Actual Control and a key road in this mountain hamlet were named after India’s first Chief of Defence Staff Gen Bipin Rawat. 
  • The military garrison looks after the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the sensitive sector.
  • Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s Rima post is just opposite the Indian garrison.
  • The small hamlet is inhabited by Meyor and Jarkin tribes.


 Obituaries

9. Archaeologist B B Lal passes away

  • Noted archeologist Braj Basi Lal, who led an excavation at the Ramjanmabhoomi site in the mid-1970s, passed away. 
  • He was honoured with Padma Vibhushan in 2021.
  • Considered India’s senior-most archaeologist, Lal was actively involved in archaeological research and writing till the age of 100.
  • He was trained by Sir Mortimer Wheeler at Taxila in 1944, after which he joined the Archaeological Survey of India and served as its Director-General from 1968 to 1972.

10. WB govt, UNICEF rope in SHGs to stop child marriage, teenage pregnancy

  • The West Bengal govt in collaboration with UNICEF will form child-friendly sanghas', comprising members of SHGs, to curb child marriage and teenage pregnancy in the state. 
  • To stop these twin menaces, the state govt and UNICEF have planned, as a pilot project, to form 110 child-friendly sanghas' in the next six months in 87 blocks in all 23 districts of the state.
  • WB is at the top in cases of child marriage and teenage pregnancy, according to a NFHS report.
